As a scholarship winner Erika GYÖNGYÖSI-WIERSUM PhD, Associate Professor of Comenius Faculty took part in ERASMUS+ staff mobility between 3 and 8 May, 2015. She gave 8 mathematics lectures in English for full-time students in first and second year in topics Geometry and Algebra at Pädagogische Hochschule Burgenland in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Professor WIERSUMNÉ managed to meet several challenges. On one hand, mathematics being an already difficult school subject was taught in English to Austrian students, who were also non-native speakers of English. This was overcome by the fact that lessons began with a vocabulary refresher game and students managed to understand interesting tasks selected with great care after using already revised expressions. On the other hand, it was not known beforehand how to insert the content of lectures into the curriculum.
Lectures were held successfully, at the end of them both the math instructors and several students in the host institution asked for the slides of lectures and photos were taken at the end of the lectures. (Loot at the big smiles on faces!)
Head of the international relations office in the host institution, Mag. Irma ORTNER-LIDY enthusiastically organized the reception of the instructor and steps has been taken such that the educational material may appear on their website as well. In order to deepen the internationalization the possibility of a joint Austrian-Hungarian research plan was raised in some mathematical topics, which we hope will take place in the near future. Professor Thomas DENES from the host institution expressed his intention to visit Comenius.
